La Luz Center Education, Kids/Family, Nonprofit, Youth Arts Education La Luz Center is a trusted, community-based nonprofit that has served Sonoma Valley since 1985. Founded in 1985 by Ligia Booker, a Colombian immigrant, La Luz has grown from grassroots efforts serving migrant farmworkers to becoming the largest provider of bilingual, culturally competent social services in Sonoma Valley. La Luz Center’s Casa de la Cultura is the cultural heartbeat of Sonoma Valley, offering free, high-quality arts education and cultural programming that strengthens identity, nurtures creativity, and unites generations. Our artistic goal is to create culturally rooted opportunities for artistic expression that affirm identity and foster shared joy. Casa hosts a full calendar of bilingual arts workshops, cultural celebrations, and youth camps designed to reflect and uplift the traditions of our Latino community while welcoming all. Since its inception, Casa de la Cultura has served hundreds of youth and their families, instilling cultural pride and fostering a sense of belonging. The program builds not just artists, but confident, connected individuals who carry their heritage forward. Founded in 2018 by artist Tracy Ferron, Life On Art is a Petaluma-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to inspiring healing and social transformation through the power of collective artmaking. Operating out of a large Victorian warehouse studio, the organization unites diverse and often underserved communities—including at-risk youth, the incarcerated, veterans, and individuals facing mental health challenges—to co-create handmade, large-scale interactive installations. Their signature platform utilizes paper maché winged hearts as a universal symbol of hope, uniquely combining professional art therapy practices with social engagement to help participants process personal and collective trauma while developing tangible artistic skills.

Life On Art is widely recognized for groundbreaking projects like Unbound, an 80-foot sculpture created in collaboration with 1,500 psychiatric patients, staff, and volunteers, which earned the 2022 NOAH Arts for Innovation first-place award. Beyond massive installations, the organization maintains deep local roots through its Heart Space teen workshops in Sonoma County schools and recurring partnership exhibits at the Museum of Sonoma County. By showcasing participant stories through expressive arts and multimedia exhibitions like Visions of Hope, Life On Art builds vital bridges of awareness and empathy between marginalized populations and the public-at-large

With these basic human attributes shared with our community, enlightenment is assured for our future. Historically community programs focused on either just physical content or on academic content, here at LDEI, we understand the community is multifaceted and deserve to have every aspect of their being served. Our programs broaden horizons by teaching perseverance, to keep going when its hard and that's when things pay off. Our program develops character by having participants work closely together, building an interdependence that shows working on the same goal moves us all forward.
